IPOH: A woman from Tamil Nadu in India died, while five others sustained injuries after the van they were travelling in skidded due to a burst tyre along KM178.8 of the North-South expressway near Bagan Serai.

Kerian OCPD Supt Mazuki Mat said the 74-year-old woman identified as Noorjahan Mohamed Yacoob died on the spot during the incident that occurred at 6.29pm.

The van he said was heading to Kuala Lumpur from Penang.

“There were eight people from Tamil Nadu in the van who were returning from a wedding in Penang.

“The other two is the 63-year-old van driver, a local who sustained injuries to his head, and fractured his left hand, and a maid whose identity is yet to be ascertained,” he said.

Supt Mazuki said four other Indian nationals including a six-year-old boy did not sustain any injuries.

He said one of the Indian national, a 60-year-old sustained severe head injuries.

“The back tyre is believed to have burst causing the van to swerve, and overturned in the middle of the expressway,” he said.

The body has been sent to the Parit Buntar hospital for post mortem, while the injured have been taken to the Taiping Hospital for treatment.
