Roti canai listed as the king of street food

PETALING JAYA: The ubiquitous Malaysian roti canai, a staple in every mamak stall, is now a world beater. The fluffy flatbread has been ranked the best street food by Croatia-based travel guide TasteAtlas.

TasteAtlas put the Malaysian staple at the top of the list of 50 street foods from around the world.

And to add to roti canai’s mouth-watering achievement, its “predecessor”, India’s paratha, is ranked fifth on the list.

Paratha was brought to Malaysia by Indian immigrants before being remodelled to local tastes and renamed roti canai.

According to the list on Facebook, Filipino spring rolls “lumpiang Shanghai” came in second with Japanese chicken kaarage and Vietnam’s banh mee in third and fourth place respectively.

TasteAtlas is a project founded by journalist and entrepreneur Matija Babic and claims to be the encyclopaedia of flavour and world atlas of traditional dishes and authentic restaurants.

The company has catalogued more than 10,000 foods and drinks and some 9,000 restaurants across the globe.
